Many of my clients ask me, “what do you think about in-floor heat in the basement and should I do it?”.  My question back to them is how much do you plan to use your basement.  If you are going to use it just for storage and shelter it probably isn’t the best idea, because it can run as much as $7,000. 

I finished my basement and put in-floor heat in and wouldn’t do it any other way.  It is so warm, comfortable and efficient, because the heat rises from the floor.  As most of us know heat rises and if you only have heat ducts in the basement ceiling you are truly never getting that warm air down where you are sitting or sleeping.

By answering my question, that should help you decide whether or not in-floor heat is the right option for you new home.

Modular/Manufactured homes cost 20-30% less than a site built home. That can be a savings in excess of $50,000.

With all the recent tornadoes throughout the U.S. the media has had a lot of coverage on this.  I have always found it interesting they generally pick on the manufactured homes (what they call mobile homes).  They also usually focus on the older homes, which actually are still called mobile homes.  Even though neighborhood after neighborhood of stick built homes are devastated by these storms the focus seems to be on the manufactured homes.

However, I did find one news report that focused on an older mobile that was damaged from a tornado and showing a newer manufactured home adjacent to this damaged one that was in perfect condition. 

Being in the business the construction methods of a manufactured home is basically the same as a stick built home.  If properly installed a manufactured home can withstand heavy winds in the wind zone it was built for.  I have always said it a tornado is going to hit your home directly, good luck.  Regardless of the home you live in always find the safest shelter and wait it out.
